Project Purpose
   To develop recommendations aimed at:

  • Making it safer and easier to walk or ride a bicycle in Wellsboro
  • Resolving issues at the intersection of Route 6 and Charleston Street (near
    Pizza Hut)
  • Improving traffic flow
  • Coordinating all modes of transportation
Wellsboro may not have the intense traffic problems associated with major metropolitan areas, but now is the time to identify potential trouble spots and think about the best ways to address them.

Different people have different transportation needs—children walking to school, visitors passing through by car, senior citizens getting a ride to a medical appointment, residents getting to work, bicyclists commuting or riding for exercise, people with low vision or other disabilities running errands, and so on. Our transportation system—the roads, parking areas, signs and signals, sidewalks, bicycle facilities, and bus services that get us where we need to go—should be integrated, balance the needs of all users, and enhance the character of our town. Through the Wellsboro Enhancement Strategy and Mobility Plan we as a community identified our most pressing transportation issues and developed a strategy to address them
.
Who was involved?
This project was a collaborative effort of the Borough of Wellsboro, Charleston Township, and Delmar Township.

It was funded by the Northern Tier Regional Planning and Development Commission with support by PennDOT, the Federal Highway Administration, and Tioga County.
The involvement of business owners and the general public was actively sought to ensure that issues are properly identified and the study recommendations represent the priorities of the people of the Wellsboro area.

Gannett Fleming, a transportation planning and engineering firm with extensive experience in Tioga County, led the project under the direction of a steering committee comprised of area representatives.
